Market Overview
US stocks eked out records on Monday as trading remained relatively muted, coinciding with the announcement of a trade pact between the US and European Union. This market action initiates a week packed with high-profile Big Tech earnings, a Federal Reserve meeting, inflation data, the July jobs report, and a looming August 1 deadline for key trade deals advocated by President Trump.
The S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose just above the flatline with its sixth consecutive record close. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) gained approximately 0.3%, also marking another record, following both indexes reaching fresh highs on Friday. Conversely, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) experienced a decline, slipping 0.2%.
Trade Deal Dynamics
The newly formed trade agreement outlines a baseline 15% tariff on European imports, a significant reduction from the previously threatened 30%. Trump described the pact as “the biggest of them all,” while European leaders provided a more mixed response.
Optimism also surrounds potential US-China talks in Stockholm, which may extend the current tariff truce set to expire on August 12.
Upcoming Earnings and Economic Data
The market is gearing up for a busy week as more than 150 S&P 500 companies are slated to report earnings. Meta Platforms (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) will kick off the reporting on Wednesday, followed by Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL) on Thursday.
Additionally, the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting commences on Tuesday, with interest rates expected to remain at 4.25%-4.50%. However, market participants are awaiting any hints regarding a possible rate cut in September.
Focus on Inflation and Labor Data
On the data front, inflation and labor will take center stage. The July reading of the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index, considered the Fed's preferred inflation measure, is anticipated to reflect a modest uptick both monthly and annually upon its release on Thursday.
Moreover, the jobs report this Friday is expected to be critical as analysts predict fluctuations in job creation that could impact Fed policy.
Industry Highlights
Concerns surrounding airline profitability surfaced when Spirit Airlines announced plans to furlough approximately 270 pilots, initiating cuts aimed at right-sizing post-bankruptcy. Shares of Spirit Holdings (FLYY) dropped 2% following the announcement.
Oil prices surged amid geopolitical developments, with West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) rising 1.9% to over $66 per barrel while Brent (BZ=F) reached nearly $69 per barrel. The US-EU trade deal includes $750 billion in European purchases of American oil and natural gas, benefiting liquified natural gas producers like Cheniere Energy (LNG) and NextDecade (NEXT), whose stocks climbed accordingly.
Tech Sector Insights
Shares of crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN) declined by 3.6% after an analyst downgrade due to lower anticipated trading volumes. Meanwhile, semiconductor stocks witnessed gains, with Nvidia (NVDA) rising nearly 1% and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) climbing over 4% following the US-EU trade agreement.
In notable developments, Samsung secured a $16.5 billion deal to provide Tesla (TSLA) with AI chips, further amplifying the sector's momentum.
